About the Role
Australian BioCommons is seeking a skilled leader to oversee the implementation and operations of its digital infrastructure, supporting vital research in environmental, agricultural, and biomedical science. Managing multiple online platforms with a diverse user base, you will mentor DevOps engineers, ensure platform stability, and drive modernisation efforts. Working closely with product owners, data curators, and developers, this role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by enhancing research capabilities through cutting-edge technology.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Manage and lead a team of DevOps engineers responsible for a range of BioCommons platforms, working with commercial clouds (AWS and Azure), on-prem clouds (based on OpenStack) and high-performance computing systems.
- Mentor the infrastructure DevOps practice community, providing guidance, expertise and leadership to the BioCommons network of digital infrastructure practitioners.
- Manage project budgets and be responsible for coordinating payments to suppliers, proposing new agreements and managing agreement updates
- Maintain SLAs, monitor performance, and continuously optimising system reliability.
- Responsibility for commercial cloud budget across the Biocommons.
Who We Are Looking For
The successful candidate will be a collaborative and adaptable leader with excellent communication skills, capable of managing a team and working effectively in agile environments. They will demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities, a proactive approach to unfamiliar challenges, and the ability to engage with stakeholders and end users through clear documentation and presentations.
You will also have:
- A degree in a relevant discipline, such as software engineering, computer science, or bioinformatics, or extensive equivalent industry experience.
- Minimum two years of experience in managing a team of DevOps engineers
- Four years of experience as a DevOps Engineer

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
