About the Role
The senior animal technician will oversee the Melbourne Bioresources Platform, requiring expertise in breeding strategies, experimental techniques, and complex animal research regulations. This role demands a deep understanding of diverse animal species, a passion for learning, and strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with researchers and staff. The successful candidate will possess excellent organisational abilities, a strong work ethic, and meticulous attention to detail.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Provide expert technical support for diverse experimental procedures, including the production of standard and genetically modified mouse lines and the care of non-standard rodent species.
- Ensure strict adherence to NHMRC, State Government, OGTR, and DAWR regulations, and contribute to the training and development of staff and students.
- Prioritise resource allocation, promote the AMS database, and work collaboratively with facility managers to optimise operations.
Who we are looking for
We are seeking a highly motivated individual with strong interpersonal skills to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of animal research regulations, experimental techniques, and database management. They will be passionate about animal welfare, collaborative, and capable of mentoring junior staff.
You will also have:
- A degree in a relevant discipline or diploma in Applied Science (Animal Technology).
- Significant experience in operating at a senior level in a complex Biomedical Research Facility.
- Extensive practical experience with the care and use of animals in a research setting, with an excellent understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of the various breeding techniques used.

This role requires the successful candidate to undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.

Bioresources staff maybe required to work across a number of different animal facilities within the Parkville Campus and with the AgriBio PC3 facility at Bundoora.
