Professor, Neonatal Medicine

Opportunity
This is a joint leadership appointment, co-funded between Mercy Health and the University of Melbourne. This new position aligns with the collective aspirations of the University of Melbourne, and Mercy Health, to embed an outstanding and internationally leading Neonatal Research Program within this clinical service. You will provide national and international leadership in neonatal research, strengthen global collaborative partnerships, and secure additional funding, as well as contribute to clinical care at Mercy Health.

The position will comprise a 0.3 FTE clinical role and a 0.2 FTE Research Director role with Mercy Health, located at Mercy Hospital for Women, and an 0.5 FTE academic professorial position with the University of Melbourne.  This position will further the reputation of the Neonatology Department at Mercy Hospital for Women as a world-renowned centre of best practice and impact.  By nurturing exceptional higher degree research students and medical student graduates to be leaders in their field, you will drive transformative research outcomes in newborn health to ensure the best possible start to life.


About You
You will be an established and outstanding clinician-academic with an international reputation in Newborn research, able to strategically expand research performance and training, clinical excellence and teaching, at Mercy Health and other University health partners. You will possess;

  • A medical qualification, registrable with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent qualification
  • A Research Doctorate

The University Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Newborn Health is responsible for teaching Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatal Paediatrics, to MD medical students.

Mercy Hospital for Women (MHW)
MHW is a high-quality research and clinical service in high-risk pregnancy and newborn care, and is the home of Mercy Perinatal: a 3 pillar centre of excellence in clinical care, education and research. The facilities and support will be provided to ensure that the appointee delivers on the expectations to drive and participate in collaborative activities across Mercy Health, with University and Health Service partners, and beyond. The MHW in Heidelberg is a leader in research and teaching and has one of only five tertiary neonatal intensive care units in Melbourne.  MHW is a statewide leader in neonatal services with approximately 1400 admissions per year with 58-bed capacity. The neonatal service is accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians for advanced training in neonatal-perinatal medicine.
