As a Senior Animal Technician at the Melbourne Bioresources Platform, you'll play a crucial role in supporting cutting-edge research by providing exceptional care for research animals. You'll have the opportunity to implement various breeding strategies, assist researchers with advanced techniques, and lead a small team. Your expertise will directly contribute to groundbreaking scientific discoveries while ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Provide Expert Animal Care: Deliver top-tier husbandry and daily care for research animals, maintaining the highest welfare standards.
- Implement Breeding Strategies: Manage and execute various breeding programmes to meet researchers' specific genetic requirements.
- Support Research Activities: Assist investigators with standard and specialised animal handling techniques, contributing directly to research outcomes.
- Lead and Mentor: Oversee and train junior staff, ensuring they meet required standards of animal care and facility operations.
- Ensure Compliance: Maintain thorough records and adhere to all relevant regulatory requirements, including NHMRC, State Government, and OGTR guidelines.
You may be a great fit if:
You are a dedicated animal care professional with a diploma or degree in Applied Science or Animal Technology, possessing extensive experience in research animal husbandry, breeding strategies, and experimental techniques, coupled with strong leadership and communication skills.
You may also:
- Have completed a diploma or degree in Applied Science, Animal Technology, or a related field.
- Possess extensive practical experience in caring for and breeding mice in a research setting.
- Demonstrate proficiency in common mouse-based experimental techniques used in biomedical research.
- Have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to mentor junior staff and collaborate with researchers.
- Show a strong commitment to animal welfare and a thorough understanding of relevant regulatory frameworks.

Melbourne Bioresources is a university wide platform that brings together all the small animal facilities on campus and combines the resources and expertise of many skilled staff. The platform offers a high standard of service to UoM researchers combined with best practice in animal care and welfare. Bioresources staff maybe required to work across a number of different animal facilities within the Parkville Campus and with the AgriBio PC3 facility at Bundoora.
