About the Role
This is a genomics training and project management role based in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, The University of Melbourne at The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity. This position is responsible for the development, management and delivery of genomics training and capacity building activities within the Asia-Pacific region to support research and public health outcomes. It will also support coordination and management of other Centre-related programs and initiatives as required.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing technical expertise in pathogen genomics, including developing and conducting training programs, development and review of laboratory processes and policies, support for quality management, and ongoing advice for regional counterparts
- Providing capacity building and training for regional laboratories to support implementation of whole genome sequencing
- Designing and developing training content including e-learning modules
Who We Are Looking For
You bring extensive experience in next-generation sequencing methods, and possess strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills in rapidly evolving laboratory environments. Your ability to apply established Standard Operating Procedures and address both general and complex issues ensures high-quality laboratory operations. Additionally, you have a proven track record of providing practical training to scientific and technical staff, fostering skill development and knowledge sharing.
With a deep understanding of culturally appropriate approaches in diverse settings, particularly within the Asia-Pacific region, you excel in cross-sectoral and cross-cultural collaboration. Your excellent interpersonal and communication skills support productive engagement with national and international partners. Coupled with strong organizational and project management abilities, you demonstrate a high level of attention to detail in planning and implementing project activities. Your exceptional written communication skills enable you to prepare briefings, reports, proposals, and public-facing materials effectively.
You will also have:
- An undergraduate qualification in Microbiology or Medical Laboratory Technology together with relevant diagnostic laboratory or research experience
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Capacity to travel frequently to regional laboratories to undertake training activities.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
