About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced bioinformatician to lead a dynamic team at the forefront of genomic integration in public health. You will have the chance to shape cutting-edge bioinformatics processes, work with advanced microbial genomic data, and make a direct impact on pathogen detection and public health outcomes. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Reporting directly to the Director/Deputy Director, the incumbent will lead the development and implementation of bioinformatics pipelines for routine genomics based public health service delivery, including validation and documentation of novel pipelines for NATA accreditation.
  • Assisting the senior management team, with organisation, structure, staffing and processes of the MDU including administration, finances and reporting.
  • Providing leadership and direction to all section staff by giving appropriate direction, monitoring and evaluating performance, fostering teamwork and ensuring that training and development needs are identified and supported.
  • Working closely with MDU Senior Staff and MDU Director/Deputy Director and Principal Scientist to ensure effective translation of novel genomic approaches into operations.

Who We Are Looking For
We’re looking for individuals who demonstrate strong technical expertise, problem-solving abilities, and a collaborative mindset, motivated by the opportunity to contribute to public health through genomic innovation. You should thrive in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to manage competing priorities and drive impactful research.

You will also have:

  • A PhD or equivalent qualification in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field
  • Experience in bioinformatic analysis in a public health laboratory setting
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R
  • Experience working in a UNIX environment
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and experience with large genome datasets
  • Superior time management, analytical, and organisational skills
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
