About the Role
This is a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic Technical Officer to be part of a renowned public health laboratory. You’ll gain valuable experience working with leading experts on pioneering microbiological research and public health projects. The role offers a collaborative, forward-thinking team environment where you can hone your skills and actively contribute to the ongoing enhancement of quality systems in the fight against infectious diseases

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Working in different Divisions/Sections of the laboratory including the Melbourne Sexual Health Clinic depending on the needs of each Division/Section and at the direction of the Deputy Director/Director.
  • Assisting with the provision of a legally robust testing service at MDU, working in line with MDU PHL objectives and observing the legal obligations associated with the notification of pathogens and the handling of specimens.
  • Ensuring that the processing of samples as requested for the detection and isolation of microorganisms and for application of subsequent biochemical, serological and molecular tests for confirmation of identification or strain typing, are done in timely manner and according to documented procedures.
  • Providing valid interpretations of tests, authorising and issuing result reports, including telephone reports, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and MDU PHL policy

Who We Are Looking For
We’re looking for people who demonstrate a high level of professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced laboratory environment. You should be motivated by the opportunity to contribute to impactful public health work and collaborate within a dynamic team.

You will also have:

  • An undergraduate qualification in Microbiology or Medical Laboratory Technology, with relevant laboratory experience
  • The qualifications and experience to achieve approval as a signatory for report sign-off.
  • A strong ability to complete sample testing accurately and in a timely manner, managing competing priorities effectively.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate effectively with senior staff, particularly when addressing potential issues that may affect service delivery.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.
