Casual Academic Tutor – International House

About the Role
International House’s Academic Tutors support the academic success and wellbeing of resident students by delivering weekly subject tutorials that complement University coursework. Tutors prepare and conduct tutorials, consult with students on topics and skills development, and collaborate with the Residential Programs Academic Manager to address student engagement and performance, up to 4 hours per week in semester teaching weeks.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Prepare and deliver subject-specific tutorials during the semester’s teaching and learning weeks. This may include preparing a brief lesson plan in line with weekly lectures and facilitating informed group discussions or other learning activities.
  • The work is of casual nature and dependent on availability, to consult with students in relation to readings, weekly topics and skills development.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as directed by the Residential Programs Academic Manager.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and submit these each week to the Residential Programs Academic Manager.

Who we are looking for
The ideal candidate demonstrates excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines effectively. They possess strong interpersonal abilities, including active listening, cultural sensitivity, professionalism, and the capacity to handle confidential information with discretion.

You will also have:

  • A completed undergraduate degree.
  • Familiarity with the syllabus of at least two core, prerequisite and/or first-year University of Melbourne subjects in the following areas: Accounting, Finance, Economics, Calculus, Physics, Biology and Chemistry.)
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage one’s own time effectively and meet deadlines successfully.
  • Ability to manage and facilitate informed group discussion and/or skills development and practice.

This role requires the successful candidate to undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.
