About the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences
The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences is a diverse faculty renowned for its research excellence, teaching, training, and policy leadership across the breadth of medical, biomedical and health science fields.

Led by the Dean, Professor Jane Gunn, the faculty is Australia’s overall leader in clinical, pre-clinical and health sciences, and sits at the heart of a flourishing ecosystem of globally recognised health and biomedical organisations across Victoria.

We are based in Parkville, with a thriving rural health campus in Shepparton. The faculty comprises six schools and 41 departments, centres and institutes. It employs more than 2,750 FTE staff members and has a large and committed community of honorary members. It educates around 11,000 students each year, offers over 140 courses, and is a significant research contributor to the University of Melbourne.

About the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences
The Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences (MSPS) is one of six schools within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS). Consistently positioned as one of the top Schools of Psychology in Australia and ranked 19th globally in the 2023 QS rankings, MSPS offers a compelling environment for education and research.

Boasting robust growth, the School attracts top-tier students nationally and internationally to our comprehensive range of APS-accredited undergraduate, graduate, professional and research programs. Teaching at the School is underpinned by excellence in research across a range of fields, including cognitive and behavioural neuroscience, cognitive and mathematical psychology, social and personality psychology, and clinical science.

Hosting a diverse community of more than 130 academic, teaching, research and professional staff, the School also includes over 100 honorary staff, 150 tutors and 120 PhD students. In 2023, we saw enrolments exceed 6500 students in undergraduate subjects, in addition to 200 students enrolling in the Graduate Diploma of Psychology, and about 140 students enrolling in fourth-year honours programs and the Graduate Diploma of Psychology (Advanced). A further 130 students were enrolled in various professional graduate programs, while a cohort of 40 students undertook coursework and industry internship opportunities as part of our non-accredited pathway, the Master of Applied Psychology.

About the Head of School opportunity
The Head of School will ensure through effective leadership that the activities of the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences advance the implementation of the Advancing Health and Advancing Melbourne 2030 strategies for the faculty and the University. Translating the strategic agenda to meaningful work is key.

The role calls for an ethical and insightful leader capable of aligning teams of academics and professionals locally and globally to collaborate around a common purpose. The leader will foster a values-based culture of innovation and creativity to enhance the research performance of the University and to achieve excellence in teaching and research outcomes.

The successful applicant will be appointed Head of School for five years initially. The appointee will also hold a professorial appointment within the School. The Head of School reports to the Dean and is a member of the Faculty Executive Committee.
